Episode 5 · Gwen, Joey, Mary
Joey arrives at the emergency room on a gurney. Mary and Dale hurry into the hallway. Mary grabs Gwen by the arm, demands news about her son, and raises her hand to slap her. A nurse interrupts to request signatures on consent forms for Joey's fractures and head injury. Mary lowers her hand and signs. During Joey's seven-hour surgery, Mary prays, Dale smokes, and Gwen photographs Joey's medical reports.
Paramedics wheel Joey into the emergency room. Mary and Dale run inside immediately. Mary confronts Gwen in the hallway, grips her arm, and demands information about Joey. She pulls back her hand to slap Gwen across the face.
A nurse rushes out with consent papers. She tells Joey's parents that he has multiple broken bones and a possible brain injury. Mary freezes before her hand can hit Gwen, drops her arm, and quickly signs the paperwork.
Joey stays in surgery for seven hours. Mary prays while Dale paces and smokes outside. Gwen handles the hospital payments at the desk, confers with a doctor, and uses her phone to take pictures of Joey's medical examination files.
“Where is my son? How is my son?”
“The family members sign that the patient had multiple fractures, suspected subdural injury. The situation is very serious.”

Joey remains in surgery while Mary and Dale wait in agony. Instead of joining their panic, Gwen pays the bills, meets with the physician, and photographs all of Joey's diagnostic records with her smartphone. What will Gwen do with these medical files once Joey makes it out of the operating room?
