Episode 4 · Gwen, Joey, Mary
Mary calls Gwen in a panic, angrily accusing her of not stopping Joey's fall. Gwen calmly states that Joey was determined to save Rory. At home, Mary falls silent, torn between Rory's past flattery and Joey's sacrifice. Rory limps toward the ambulance, crying and begging to ride with Joey. Gwen refuses and tells Rory to treat her own arm first. Bystanders criticize Rory, while Gwen pretends to comfort her.
Mary calls Gwen in a frantic state from her home. She angrily blames Gwen for not holding Joey back on the mountain. Gwen speaks calmly and replies that Joey was fully set on rescuing Rory.
Mary falls silent in her home after hearing that Joey sacrificed himself for Rory. A flashback shows Rory flattering her in the past. Now Mary sits torn by the reality of what Joey did.
Rory limps over to the ambulance while holding her injured arm. She weeps and asks Gwen for permission to ride along with Joey. Gwen turns her down politely, advising her to get medical care for her arm first.
Nearby hikers whisper harsh remarks about Rory clinging to a married man in front of his wife. Rory stands humiliated as Gwen feigns sympathy, quietly waiting for Mary to unleash her anger on Rory.
“What good is your wife? Why didn't you hold him back?”
“Mom, I called out to him, but Joey was set on saving Rory. I couldn't hold him back.”
“Sister-in-law, can I come along? I want to stay with Joey.”
“Rory, don't be afraid. Joey cares about you so much. He definitely won't blame you.”
Gwen reassures Rory out loud that Joey cares about her and will never blame her for his injuries. Behind her polite front, Gwen knows Joey's parents will never forgive Rory for what happened to their son. How will Mary react when she finally meets Rory face-to-face at the hospital?
