Characters & relationships

Who is who in The Beasts Kill for Me, and how they are connected.

  • Ivar

    Beast Commander and former villager

Conscripted by force a decade ago, Ivar survived the Beast Wars by learning the Beast Tongue. He returns with royal favor but no memory of his wife or children. He rejects titles from King Bjorn and disguises himself as a commoner. His only goal is locating his lost family using half of a wedding medallion.

  • Astrid

    Enslaved wife of Ivar

Astrid lost her husband to Orm Volgrim's press gang and accepted Orm's marriage proposal under the false promise that House Volgrim would search for Ivar. Instead, she endured ten years of unpaid servitude and abuse. She guards her matching half-medallion and clings to the hope that her true husband will come back.

  • Orm Volgrim

    Cruel nobleman and enforcer

Orm tore Ivar from his home, lied about searching for him, and turned Astrid and her children into household laborers. When he spots the Beast Commander's matching medallion, panic sets in. He hides evidence and burns family tokens. Then he tries to sell the children to the salt mines.

  • Leif

    Enslaved son of Ivar

Leif grew up under House Volgrim's boot after witnessing his father get dragged away. Defiant and protective of his mother, he refuses to sign indenture contracts for the salt mines. Even when beaten by overseers, he rejects claims of Ivar's death and insists his father is coming home to rescue them.

  • Runa

    Enslaved daughter of Ivar

Runa serves House Volgrim while shielding her mother from constant violence. When Orm tosses their family pendant into the brazier, she fishes it out with tongs. She wears the silver token into the Great Hall so the Beast Commander can see it and recognize her.

Story so far

The Beasts Kill for Me operates on a harsh imbalance of power. Ten years before the main story begins, a peasant named Ivar is beaten unconscious by Orm Volgrim and forced into the front lines of the Beast Wars. Orm does not merely draft a soldier. He dismantles an entire household. Back in the village, Ivar's wife Astrid takes on debt to survive. Orm offers to search for Ivar if she marries him, and forces her children into cellar servitude beneath animal pens.

The central conflict hinges on identity and perception. Ivar returns from the war as the Beast Commander, an elite warrior who commands beasts in their own tongue. King Bjorn offers him wealth and land, but Ivar wants his family. The tragic catch is that war wounds took away the memory of their faces. All he holds is half of a split medallion. When he walks through the Volgrim estate, he passes his wife and daughter without knowing who they are.

Orm represents petty nobility driven by panic. The moment Orm realizes the King's commander carries a token matching Astrid's amulet, his posture shifts from smug cruelty to survival instinct. Orm hides the truth. He throws their silver token into fire coals and attempts to ship the family to distant salt mines. The power dynamic turns volatile. Orm knows that one word of recognition from Astrid will cost him his head. Meanwhile, young Leif absorbs beatings rather than surrender faith in his father.
