Running from slave-catchers who bought her from her debtor husband, Lyra takes refuge inside Citadel Obsidian. In the courtyard, a horned head maid tries to recruit a nursemaid for the dragon heir. The terrified crowd panics after two maids are thrown from a balcony. While onlookers scream about the hatchling's madness, Lyra hears telepathic cries about his real pain and the doctors' mistreatment.
Lyra explains that she can hear the baby dragon's inner thoughts. A small dragon spirit calls her mommy as she recalls saving him from royal doctors who wanted to kill him and taming the Sovereign.
Slave-catchers chase Lyra through cobblestone city streets after her husband sells her for debt. Seeking a place to hide, she slips through the heavy iron gates and enters Citadel Obsidian.
Inside the courtyard, a horned head maid gathers women to recruit a nursemaid for the dragon heir. The applicants hesitate and back away in fear because rumors claim the young lord suffers from blood-madness.
Two maids are thrown from the high balcony and crash down into the courtyard. One injured applicant bleeds on the ground and screams to the crowd that the young lord has gone completely insane.
Lyra hears a child's inner voice complaining about hot wands and a sharp stick piercing his gums. She looks upward to see the chained baby dragon heir breathing fire and staring down into her eyes with tears.
“Anyone else? Ten gold coins a week. Full royal protection.”
“Mercy! He's crazy! The Young Lord has gone completely insane!”
“I'm not crazy you big dummies! There's a nasty sharp stick jammed in my gums. It stabs me. Somebody help me!”
“Why are these bad wizards poking me with hot glowing wands? That sleeping potion tastes like bitter mud! Somebody save me!”
The chained young dragon breathes a blast of fire in agony and locks his tear-filled blue eyes directly onto Lyra in the courtyard below. Having heard his telepathic cries for help, will Lyra risk her own safety to step forward and save the tormented baby dragon from his keepers?
