Fallon brings a weeping Knox into their home after Kellan rejects them. Knox asks if anyone besides his mother loves him. Fallon comforts him with the thought of moving to Northfall to be with his grandparents. Knox asks for one last memory with his father on his fifth birthday. That evening, Fallon lights candles on Knox's cake, but Kellan never arrives. Fallon calls Kellan, who hangs up on her. Knox removes his crown and accepts that Kellan abandoned them.

Knox removes his birthday crown as the candles flicker on his cake. He accepts that his father has completely abandoned him and decides to stop calling him Dad. Will Fallon and Knox leave for Northfall immediately, or will Kellan and the Emberfang pack interfere before mother and son can escape?
