Maren escapes the deep trench and mounts a hidden blackfin ray. She speeds toward Breakwind Reef to find reinforcements for the court. At the outer border, she meets Tide Guard Deputy Commander Theo Marlowe. She tries to report the raider attack, but Theo grabs her violently and pulls her into the reef. He explains that King Nereus sent him to stop her, claiming she faked the crisis.
