Maren Ashforth directs terrified civilians into the shelter tunnel while raiders scrape bone blades against the coral above. An elder mermaid begs Maren to swim through the currents to fetch King Nereus Thorne and the Tideguard. Maren looks down at her pregnant belly and recalls how Nereus dismissed her warnings and blamed her after Seraphine Voss died in her past life. Knowing he will not return, Maren refuses, until someone else volunteers to go.
