A giant beast attacks a wagon on a stone road. Two men take the horses and escape, leaving Mara Vale and a young woman stranded. Mara collects knives, a pot, and cured meat from the cart. They run to a stone tower while wolves gather outside. Mara sears meat over the fire to distract the alpha wolf. The pack stays calm, but morning leaves them without meat or water.
A massive creature attacks on the open plains road and flips a horse-drawn wagon over. A fleeing man and another companion seize the remaining horses. They ride away in panic, abandoning Mara Vale and the young woman behind in the dirt.
Mara searches through the shattered cart. She pulls out several knives, a sturdy cooking pot, and strips of cured meat. She urges her companion forward. Together, they sprint up a grassy hill toward an ancient stone tower standing nearby.
A wolf pack with glowing eyes surrounds the shelter. Mara starts a hearth fire instead of brandishing a weapon. She cooks seasoned meat in a pan. The scent draws the alpha wolf forward, and Mara feeds it a morsel to secure peace.
The wolves sleep outside throughout the night. Sunlight fills the stone tower courtyard at dawn. The young woman checks their remaining rations and finds empty bags. Mara inspects their supply, noting that their food is gone and their water jug is nearly dry.
“Take the horses! Move!”
“Be angry when we're indoors.”
“I don't need them full. I need them interested.”
“We're out of meat.”
Dawn breaks over the tower, bringing immediate danger. Mara and the young woman discover they have consumed their last piece of meat, while their water jug is almost drained. A massive wolf stands right at the window opening, staring directly at them. How will the two survivors find food and water without becoming prey to the watchful pack?
