The Zhao family and neighbors force 周成 to sign divorce papers. 赵母 throws his belongings and old pickling jar into the mud outside. Homeless, 周成 visits the fishpond to ask 刘大拐 for work. 刘大拐 flings cabin keys into dirty water. 周成 retrieves them and moves in. While patrolling at night, 周成 discovers tender winter watercress. He pickles it using traditional methods. Seven days later, 梁师傅 samples the cress and orders ten pounds.

After a full week of fermentation, 周成 opens the jar to test the watercress. The pickled stems remain crisp and pleasantly tart. He chops the greens, seals samples into jars, and walks along the country road to visit town eateries.
03:19: A Deal in the Kitchen
周成 enters the busy hot pot restaurant kitchen and offers his sour watercress to 梁师傅. 梁师傅 bites into the sample and immediately approves the quality. He puts down cash for ten pounds, demanding the exact same taste on future orders.
