Who is who in The Dragon Lord's Regret, and how they are connected.
Elara Vance
Initially defined by her reliance on Agni for survival, Elara undergoes a traumatic shift. After being used, discarded, and nearly killed, she begins the search for her own agency. Her bond with the Ancient Black Dragon, Caius, represents her attempt to survive and perhaps find a new path after the betrayal of the Red Dragon.
Agni Ignis
The Red Dragon Lord.
Arrogant and possessive, Agni views his human brides as accessories . He claims to love Lucia, yet his inability to protect her without hurting others proves his volatility. He is obsessed with his own power and struggles to process the loss of Elara, not because of lost love, but because of his pride.
Lucia Thorne
The new favored consort.
Lucia is manipulative and insecure. She uses her position as Agni’s new lover to isolate him from his past. She views Elara as a threat to her status and is willing to feign illness to ensure Agni priorit izes her life over his former bride's.
Caius
The Ancient Black Dragon King.
Resurrected from the depths of the Abyss, Caius is a force of nature. He is possessive of Elara, claiming her as his bride the moment he saves her. Unlike Agni, he is mysterious and wields immense power, showing a strange interest in human customs like decorating for Christmas.
Story so far
The Dragon Lord's Regret is a harsh look at the shelf life of a human bride in the world of dragons. Elara Vance spends three years surviving on the breath of the Red Dragon Lord, Agni, only to be cast aside when he decides a new woman, Lucia, is his true love. It is a story not about romance, but about the brutal reality of being a disposable asset to a powerful creature who views himself as a god.
The power dynamics shift early and violently. Agni treats Elara as a possession, first as a protected bride and then as an inconvenient servant. He uses his dragon breath as a weapon and a bargaining chip, ultimately choosing to endanger Elara’s life to appease Lucia. The drama does not shy away from the fact that Agni’s affection is conditional and shallow.
The arrival of Caius, the Ancient Black Dragon King, introduces a new, more dangerous variable. Unlike Agni, who thrives on domestic ego and manipulation, Caius is an ancient force who views Elara as his fated match. He rescues her from the abyss where Agni left her to die. This changes the stakes from a woman fighting for her master’s attention to a woman trying to regain her autonomy while navigating the interest of a much more powerful, and potentially more destructive, entity.
We watch the fallout through the lens of betrayal and survival. Elara is the central pillar of the story, moving from a submissive bride to a woman who realizes the cost of her devotion. Agni remains an arrogant antagonist whose regret is slow to surface, mostly appearing as confusion and irritation now that his servant is gone. Meanwhile, the audience is left to ask whether any dragon can actually offer love, or if El ara is simply trading one gilded cage for another.
